At the Council meeting on February 15, 2018, Mayor Pro-Tempore Hall, on behalf of Mayor Powell, proclaimed February 16, 2018 as Chief Gary Soward Day. Chief Gary Soward began his safety career with the Pleasanton Police Department in August of 1975 and as a result of diligent work and demonstrated ability, he advanced through the ranks to his final and most important position of "Chief of Police" on June 30, 2000 of the Pleasanton Police Department.

Throughout his 37 years of service, Chief Soward was:
  • 1979- Awarded the Aerl Jernigan Memorial Award for Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
  • 1985- Received the Distinguished Police Officer Award from United States Senator Phil Gramm
  • 1987- Assigned to the 81st Judicial District Narcotics task Force
  • 2007- Received an Award from the City of Pleasanton as Employee of the Year
